Published in Daily Press on October 17, 2003 (in part): HAMPTON - Elbert R. Baker Sr., 72, passed away Thursday, Oct. 16, 2003, after a lengthy illness. A native of Pitt County, N.C., Elbert had been a Peninsula resident since 1950.
Elbert was a foreman in the shipfitters department, Newport News Shipbuilding, retiring in 1993 with 43 years of service. He was a member of Grace Baptist Church, Hampton.
A beloved husband, father, and grandfather, Elbert leaves to cherish his memories his wife of 53 years, Hulda C. Baker; his son, Elbert R. Baker Jr. and grandson, Jordon Baker, both of Nashville, Tenn. Elbert is also survived by two brothers, Wilbert Baker of Washington, N.C., and Ray Baker of Raleigh, N.C.; one sister, Doris Chipman of Camden, N.J.; and preceded in death by two brothers, M.D. Baker and Delbert Baker.
