HAMPTON - Richard H. Bateman Sr. met his loving savior face to face on Feb. 20, 1995. A native of Suffolk, he had been a lifelong Peninsula resident, retiring from the Daily Press in 1992 after 42 years of service.
Mr. Bateman was a member of Cornerstone Fellowship Church of God, where he was a Sunday school member and a musician in the music department. He was a member of the Newport News Retired Men's Mariners' Choir, the Swingin' Singers, the Daily Press Retirees Club and also was a former guitar teacher for the Newport News Parks and Recreation Department.
He is survived by his wife, Dreama Bateman; four daughters, Dreama Johnson, Julia Wainwright and Ann Peckman of Newport News and Jan Celis of South Carolina; four sons, Charles Johnson, Richard Bateman Jr. and Jeff Bateman of Newport News, and Michael Bateman of Hampton; two sisters, Elsie Parker of Hampton and Helen Byrd of Suffolk; two brothers, John Bateman of Virginia Beach and Charles Bateman of Hampton; and six grandchildren.
A funeral service will be conducted at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 22, at Cornerstone Fellowship Church of God, 65 Hall Road, Hampton, by the Rev. Terry Swiney. The burial will be private.
Memorials may be sent to the church building fund.
