He received a bachelor's degree from Dartmouth in 1931, a master's degree from Harvard in 1932, and a doctorate in American history from the State University of New York in Buffalo in 1949. During WWII, he served as a Statistician and later as an Historian of the Persian Gulf Command in Tehran, Iran. He retired as Professor of History at Amundsen-Mayfair College, now Truman College, one of Chicago' city colleges.

He served on the Boards of Trustees of the First Unitarian Church of Chicago and Meadville/Lombard Theological School.
