Francis M Fish was a veteran of the Civil War. He was a resident of Independence, NY, when he enlisted as a Private on 12 Aug 1862 at the age of 20 years. He enlisted in Co E 1st Dragoons New York on 16 Aug 1862. Francis was promoted to Full Corporal on 9 Feb 1865. He mustered out with the company on 30 Jun 1865 at Cloud's Mill, Virginia.

This regiment was organized as the 130th Infantry. On 28 Jul 1863 it was transferred to the mounted service and designated as the 19th Cavalry on Aug 11th. The designation was changed on Sept 10th to the 1st Regiment of Dragoons.

The regiment participated in about 65 battles and skirmishes.

Francis was the son of Lewis Benjamin Fish and Frances "Fannie" W Remington. His father (and it is assumed his mother) are buried in Allegany County, New York.

After Francis was discharged, he joined his brother Charles in Sarpy County, Nebraska. He married Samantha Caroline LaMotte in 1872. Samantha had a son from a previous marriage, Herbert Hamilton. Francis and Samantha had four children; son Frank who died at the age of 1 year, daughter Nellie who also died at the age of 1 year, Guy and Francis.

By 1920 Samantha and Guy had died and Francis was living with his daughter-in-law Helen Fish in Springfield, Sarpy County, Nebraska. Francis died in Belden, Cedar County, Nebraska, in 1921 at the age of 78 years.

NOTE:
Headstone photo is the Fish family lot. Stone to left is son Guy. Stone to right is for children Nellie and Frank. GAR marker for Francis is next to the headstone of Nellie and Frank. There is no headstone for Francis and his wife, Samantha.
