John married Janice Faye Hill, June 1, 1957, in Paris, Bourbon Co., KY.

John William Sosby, 73, longtime former Claiborne Farm Manager, died Saturday, August 6th, 2011 at St. Joseph Hospital, Lexington, KY. He was born May 4th, 1938 in Bourbon Co., son of the late Earl Bryant Sosby, Sr. and Emma Jean Carter. John was a 1956 graduate of Bourbon Co. High School, and was a member of Hutchison United Methodist Church. He served in the United States Army Reserves for 12 years where he attained the position of First Sergeant.

John came to Claiborne as a child when his father worked there. His first job at the farm was cutting weeds at age 9. He became yearling manager in 1964 and general manager in 1975. He retired from the farm in 2003 after 47 years. He was named farm manager of the year in 1984 by his peers in the Kentucky Thoroughbred Farm Managers Club, and he received the Ambassador of Racing Award from Kentucky Thoroughbred Media in 1991.

Claiborne president Seth Hancock said that Mr. Sosby was "the most caring, giving person I've ever known. He's as fine a man as ever walked the hills of Bourbon Co." "He was there when Secretariat was syndicated," Hancock said of the Triple Crown winner. And as yearling manager, Mr. Sosby helped to bring to the racing world the likes of Ruffian, Swale and Ferdinand. "Every great horse that came off of Claiborne Farm in the last 50 years, he had a hand on," Hancock said. John remained a Bourbon Co. sports booster after leaving his post at Claiborne. He was chairman of the Bourbon Co. Fair Board and Horse Show from 1993 until his death in 2011.

John was well known for his community work, whether it was building baseball fields for Little Leaguers or driving a school bus even in retirement. "He was a wonderful horseman and a wonderful guy," said Arthur Hancock, owner of Stone Farm. "He did a lot for the community and Paris. He was a salt-of-the-earth person."

He is survived by his loving wife, Janice Hill Sosby; 2 sons, John "Tony" (Lydia) Sosby and Timmy (Terri) Sosby; 2 daughters, Kim Jones and Kristie (David Jay) Shelley; 6 grandchildren; 4 great grandchildren; 3 brothers, Earl Bryant (Jean) Sosby, Jr., Howard Thomas (Ada Buckler) Sosby, and David Irvin (Linda) Sosby; 1 sister, Judy Carol (Michael) Juett; 1 sister-in-law; 3 brothers-in-law; several nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, and a host of other family and friends who mourn his passing.

Visitation was held from 4:00 until 9:00 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 9th, 2011 at the Bourbon Co. High School under the direction of the Hinton-Turner Funeral Home. Funeral services were held at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 10th, 2011 at the high school with Rev. Don Reed, Rev. Dan Russell, and E.J. Caswell officiating.
