A family of four was found dead in their sprawling home in an affluent suburb after what appeared to be a murder-suicide, state police said.
The bodies of Amy and Sam Friedlander and their children, 8-year-old Gregory and 10-year-old Molly, were discovered in their four-bedroom, blue-gray, Colonial-style house in Cross River on Tuesday afternoon.
A neighbor told WCBS-TV that the couple was getting a divorce.
Gregory Friedlander of Cross River died on Oct. 18. He was 8 and a third grade student at Lewisboro Elementary School.
Gregory also attended religious school at The Jewish Family Congregation in South Salem and played local youth soccer.
"Gregory was very bright," Lewisboro Elementary School Principal Cristy Harris said. "He excelled in math and enjoyed solving challenging math problems. He was an expressive and creative writer. All of his peers thought he was funny and a good friend. He was an all around wonderful, determined and enthusiastic child. His favorite thing was baseball. A sweet and thoughtful child."
He also played Little League, on a section A Lewisboro Baseball Association team this summer.
"Not only was Gregory an excellent player, but he was a great teammate as well," said Frank DeGrasse, Gregory baseball coach. "The best illustration would have been towards the end of the semifinal playoff game. Going into the last inning, we had a very large lead and the game was in hand. As all the boys were waiting to find out their fielding positions for the last inning, Gregory came to me and offered to play the outfield for the last inning so that one of the younger boys could experience the excitement of being in the infield when the final out was made. I know it sounds like a very small gesture on his part, but believe me, most of the very good players are far too competitive to ever be that thoughtful and kind to this teammates. Gregory was a notable exception."
Gregory was the son of the late Amy P. (nee Perez) and late Sam Friedlander, and brother of the late Molly Friedlander.
Gregory is survived by his grandparents Gary and Roberta (nee Wolfman) Perez, and great grandmother Ruth Wolfman.
Funeral services took place today at 9:30 a.m. at Joseph Levine & Sons at 4737 Street Road in Trevose in Bucks County, Pa. Interment followed at Montefiore Cemetery.
There will be a memorial service for the Friedlander family at the Jewish Family Congregation in South Salem on Sunday at 12:30.
