Bertha E. Cedar Fleps, 100, formerly of 354 Pennsylvania Ave, Central Towers and the Residential Center, died Tuesday (May 29, 2001) in the Lutheran Home, Kane. She was born Feb. 24, 1901, in Kane, the daughter of Charles O. and Augusta Anderson Cedar. Along with her husband, she owned and operated the former South Side Grocery on South Edgar St., Kane, for more than 50 years, retiring in 1974. She was a member of Tabor Evangelical Lutheran Church in Kane where she was a member of the E.L.C.A and Lydia Group. She was also a member of the American Association of Retired Person, Kane Senior Center, and volunteered at the Residential Care Center and Lutheran Home in Kane. She enjoyed a life filled with reward and success. As a wife, sister and aunt, she provided the guidance, support and dedication to her special family. As a business woman, she took this role seriously and passed on the traits of hard work, focus and fairness; and for this, she was admired by her family and many friends. She found pleasure and satisfaction in every day. On Feb. 24 of this year, she celebrated her 100th birthday with 75 family members at the Kane Country Club. She is survived by a sister, Ella M. Stodie of Kane; and a brother, Ellsworth C. Cedar of Goleta, Calif.; and several nieces and nephews, including Jo Ann Johnson Carlson of Jamestown. She was preceded in death by her husband, George Fleps, whom she married Jan. 12, 1946, in Ridgway, Pa., and who died Jan. 27, 1990; four sisters: Florence E. Valentour, Ruth H. Chilcott, Agnes C. Battaglia and Amy M. Johnson; and four brothers: C. Walford, Richard L., Oscar W. and Arthur F. Cedar.
