"Around 9:00 AM Captain George V. Moody with two guns of his battery,the Madison (Louisiana)light Artillery, moved up under heavy musket fire to engage Greene's advancing Federals. One of his officers, Lt John Gorey, was shot in the head as he sighted in the last shot from his gun, but the gallant rearguard action gave the Rebel Infantry time to pull back to the West Woods.
