Robert Perry Amos, 69, of St. Simons Island, Ga., died Wednesday, July 1, 2009, after a brief illness.
Born July 17, 1939, in Tuscola, Ill., he was the son of Whilden and Elizabeth Amos of Shelbyville. He married Ellen Wilson on June 15, 1963, and she preceded him in death in March of 2009.
Survivors include his children, Bob Jr., Jeanne and Julie; and grandchildren, Sarah, Catherine, Mark, Mary and Lorelei.
Mr. Amos' career with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers took him to Fort Belvoir, Va., where, as the only second lieutenant brave enough to date the post commander's daughter, he met his wife. Army life took the family to Germany, sparking a lifelong interest in travel. Bob's engineering career later led to South Carolina, Nebraska and then to Hercules Inc. in Brunswick, Ga.
He was a veteran of the Vietnam War and was awarded a bronze star for his efforts in 1966 and 1967.
After Bob and Ellen settled on St. Simons Island in 1980 with their children, their home became the center of family life on the island. From Island Players set designing, family trips, fishing at the beach week, sports events and backyard gardening, Bob was happiest spending time with his children and grandchildren. Family and friends knew that his door was always open and looked forward to hearing about his latest research project, bird spotting at his makeshift birdbath or additions to his collections.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Edo Miller and Sons Funeral Home in Brunswick.
An interment service will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Oglethorpe Memorial Gardens, St. Simons Island, with a funeral Mass at 11 a.m. at St. William Catholic Church, followed by a reception at the parish hall.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may by made to the American Cancer Society of Glynn County at http://main.acsevents.org/goto/bobamos.
