Michael Gibbons
Birth: Nov. 15, 1866
Death: Feb. 27, 1932

Spanish-American War Congressional Medal of Honor Recipient. He served in the United States Navy during the War with Spain as an Oiler on board the "USS Nashville". He was awarded the CMOH for his bravery during the cutting of the cable leading from Cienfuegos, Cuba, on May 11, 1898. His citation reads "Facing the heavy fire of the enemy, Gibbons set an example of extraordinary bravery and coolness throughout this action." His Medal was awarded to him on July 7, 1899. A native of County Mayo, Ireland, he resided in Portsmouth, Virginia after his discharge from the Navy, working in the Naval Shipyards. After 35 years he returned to his ancestral Ireland home, where he passed away in 1932. He reposed in an unmarked grave until 1999. (bio by: Russ Dodge)
