WAS AN OLD SETTLER, Mrs. Fannie Wise, Who Came to Lawrence at Early Date, Died in St. Louis, Saturday.
Mrs. Fanny Wise died last Saturday in St. Louis, after having been in poor health for ten years or more. Her sons, Arthur and Alfred, passed through here today with the body, which will be laid to rest in the family lot in Topeka, Tuesday.
The death of Mrs. Wise brings to mind an instance of the tenderness of a Jew for his sister. Mrs. Wise was a sister of Simon and Leo Steinberg, who for forty years were prominent in Lawrence affairs. Simon Steinberg reared a family, but Leo remained a bachelor, and passed away a few years ago.
Mr. Wise was in business in the early and turbulent days of Kansas and during a disturbance, which in no way reflected upon his character or honor, was killed, leaving his wife and several children.
It was then that Leo Steinberg stepped in to assume the responsibility of the care of his sister and her family, and knowing that it might delay for some years his own marriage, released the young woman to whom he was engaged. The Wise family prospered, some of the children graduating from the university, but their uncle never married.
She was born in Huettenbach, Germany, north of Nuremberg.
On the LDS web site, a Manhattan marriage for 9 March 1870 between Fannie Steinberg and Jonas Wise. Her parents are Adolph and Hannah Steinberg. She was born in Huettenbach, Bavaria. His parents are Archer Wise and Gette Lob. He was born in London, England.
See obit under her husband for his death.
Her three children were Lena Wise (1871), Arthur H. Wise (July 1872) and Alfred J. Wise (after his father died in July 1874).
Alfred married 27 Jun 1914 Beatrice E. Lowenberg in Chicago, IL. She was born in Germany. They are in the 1920, 1930, and 1940 census records living in Detroit, MI. They did not appear to have any children.
