Gerhard Henry was born in Hanover, Germany. He is the son of Herman Amerland and Catherine Budke. His parents were married on January 2, 1852, in Hanover.
In 1853, he and his parents set sail on a vessel for New Orleans, Louisianna, USA. Baby Gerhard died during this voyage, and was buried at sea.
When his parents arrived in America, they met up with Gerhard's uncle for whom he was name after, Gerhard Heinrich Amerland, in St. Louis. They traveled north until they reached Wabasha, Wabasha Co, MN, where they settled. Two miles south of the little village, Herman claimed 80 acres of wild timber land, which is now inside the city limits. There he built a small log house and developed a farm. He had one of the best farms in the county. In 1870, Herman built a comfortable frame house and other needed buildings. A mutual respect was developed between the Amerlands and the Native Americans. The Native Americans camped and had their tepees in the Amerland woods, and often came to the house to trade fish and game for tobacco and food. Several Indian mounds were on the farm.
Both of Gerhard's parents died on the home farm; his father, Herman, died October 18, 1893, and his mother, Catherine, died May 11, 1895.
Gerhard was the oldest of ten children. His brothers and sisters, all born in Wabasha, MN, are as follows:
