"DEATH OF A SEA CAPTAIN - On Tuesday evening, Captain JAMES SELBY, an aged sea captain of this city, came to his death under the following circumstances: - While returning fro his afternoon walk, and when within a square of his residence, his cane slipped from under him, and he was precipitated to the ground. He was picked up in an insensible condition, and before he reached his home life was found to be extinct.
Captain SELBY was born in Snow Hill, Maryland on the 20th of July 1771. He went to sea at an early age, and in that profession amassed quite a large forturne. During the war of 1812, the vessel of which he was owneer was seized by the English, and he himself made a prisoner. During this war he lost th greater part of his fortune. At an advanced age he retired from the maritime profession, and had since been residing in this city, in Otsego street, below Christian.
Captain Selby was extensively known in Philadelphia, and hislife has been characterized by many deeds of benevolence, Up to the hour of his deat, he was in possession of all his mental faculties, and from his appearance it would have been supposed that many years were yet to be spared to him. His loss will be mourned by a large circle of relatives and friends. The funeral of Captain SELBY will take place tomorrow morning.
