She was born in Gentilly, Minnesota, the second child of Hilaire Fortier (1866-1928) and Sarah Marie Regimbal (1875-1913).
Four months after her birth, she and her 2 year old brother Avilla were on their way to Moxee by train. The Fortiers and others headed west in boxcars filled with people and goods, lured by the offer of cheap land in a newly irrigated area of the Yakima Valley.
