Alvin W. "Did" Vartorella, 80, of Berlin Heights, died peacefully on May 12, 2008 at Stein Hospice Care Center in Sandusky following an extended illness.
The youngest of 12 children of Italian immigrants, Alvin was born Aug. 19, 1927, at his childhood home in Berlin Heights and lived his entire life in the town. He graduated from Toledo Barber College and practiced barbering as a young man, then moved to employment with the Ohio Turnpike Commission, retiring in 1987 assuperintendent of tollcollections after 31 years of service. He was always interested in flying, piloting small planes as a young man prior to marriage, and building and flying model airplanes in his retirement. Alvin was a lifelong member of the Knights of Columbus. He was a family man and greatly enjoyed get-togethers with family and friends.
During the last months of his life, numerous friends and extended family members, from near and far, called and visited regularly and generously shared with him the positive influence he had on their lives, for which he was and the family is extremely grateful. He was a kind and loving husband, father, grandfather, uncle, brother, and friend and will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
Alvin is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Evelyn (Keech); and six adult children and their spouses, Kathy Heilman of Milan, Sandy Vartorella (Chris Elam) of Durham, N.C., Vicki Haynes of Denver, Steve (Mary) Vartorella of Brunswick Hills, Susan Boose of Strongsville, Ohio, and Andrea (Gary) Taylor of Bellevue. Survivors also include 12 grandchildren, Nick Struve, Sarah, Abbey, Alex, and Matthew Heilman,, Justin and Michelle Haynes, Caitlin Vartorella, Stephen, Tyler, and Alyssa Boose, and Brooke Taylor.
Other survivors include his brother, Albert "Biz" Vartorella of Berlin Heights; and numerous nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews living locally and out-of-state.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Vincent and Mary; and 10 siblings, Catherine (Carrie), Pat, Frank, Dominic, Joe, George, Lena Kendall, Rosie, infant Stella, and William (Billy).
Friends may call 4-9 p.m. Thursday in Morman-Hinman-Tanner Funeral Home, 38 South St., Berlin Heights. A funeral mass will be celebrated at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Huron at 11:30 a.m. Friday by the Rev. Jeffery Sikorsky, followed by burial at Riverside Cemetery in Berlin Heights.
