Former Sonora resident Richard "Dick" N. Clayton died Sept. 26 at a Sonoma hospital. He was 88.
He was born in Portland, Ore., and was raised in Vallejo. He served in the U.S. Coast Guard during World War II. While he developed Sonora Trailer Park, he lived in Sonora for a time. He was founder of Sonora Water Company, and developer of the Justin Court subdivision in Jamestown and various properties in Fairway Acres in Sonora.
He loved Tuolumne County and its community members.
His passions were real estate and property development. He loved working with people and was an avid tennis player, an expert sailor and commodore of Marin Yacht Club, which he helped build. He most recently had lived in Sonoma for 16 years.
Mr. Clayton is survived by his wife of 25 years, Cindy (Lakatos) Clayton, of Sonoma; sons and daughters-in-law, Val G. and Vicki Clayton, of Petaluma, and Richard G. and Kim Clayton, of Sonoma; and grandchildren, Valentine, Vanessa, Justin and Katie.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Mabel G. Clayton, in 1977, and Valentine Clayton, in 1944.
Services are private.
