Eugene Theodore Hanks was born September 20, 1925, in Detroit, Michigan, to the late, Theodore and Albertha Hanks. He was the oldest of 9 siblings. He was baptized at Second Baptist Church at an early age and accepted Christ as his personal Savior.
Eugene was educated in the Detroit Public School system, but droped out of school in the 11th grade so that he could work to help support his family. He worked for the Bohn Aluminum & Brass for 12 years, until the factor closed. On March 10, 1944, Eugene was drafted into the U.S. Army, serving honorably as a corporal until his discharge on April 21, 1946. While in the army, he worked as a demolition expert because he was good at destroying things.
On March 22, 1949, Eugene wooed and married Elaine Fairchild and from this union 3 children were born; Edrick, Eleen and Enrico. In 1952, he was employed by the City of Detroit's Parks & Recreation Department, and later transferred to the City's santiation department until his retirement in 1987.
Better known as Gene by his wife, family members and close friends, he ran track as a teenager, he loved boxing, sports and horse racing and was a jazz enthusist. He was alos an avid coin collector. After retiring from the City, Gene enjoyed working in his garden and maintaining his lawn. He loved spending time with his family, being in the company of his friends, lounging and watching television and playing with his dog, Mysti.
Eugene Hanks departed this life on Saturday, June 25, 2005. He leaves to cherish his memory, his loving wife of 56 years, Elaine, his children, Ricky (Deborah), Eileen (Richard), Rico, his granddaughter, Adrienne, his brothers, Fred (Dorothy), William, and Martin, his sisters, Dorothy Clark, Joan Hanks, Louise Hanks, and Marie Shannon, one brother-in-law, Louie Fairchild-El, one sister-in-law, Dolores Murria, many nieces and nephews as well as great nieces and nephews, his daughter-in-law, Veronica Sims, his Goddaughter, Krystal Roquemore and a host of relatives and friends.
