H. W. Bethard Rites Today In Coushatta
COUSHATTA, Jan. 2 (Special)—Funeral services for Henry W. Bethard Jr., 62, prominent Coushatta attorney and father of Henry W. Bethard III, will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the First Methodist Church here.
The Rev. Fred Schwendimann will officiate and burial will be in Springville Cemetery under the direction of Rose-Neath Funeral Home.
Mr. Bethard died unexpectedly of a heart attack at his home here Sunday.
A native of Harrisonburg, he was a graduate of Loyola University law school in New Orleans and had lived here since 1922.
He was a chairman of the board of directors of the Bank of Coushatta, legal counselor and secretary of the Red River-Bayou Pierre Levee District, a former vice president of the Red River Valley Improvement Assn., a member of the executive committee of the Louisiana Levee Board Assn., and from 1947 to 1951 was chairman of the board of commissioners of the Louisiana State Library. He was a member of the Louisiana and American Bar Associations.
A veteran of World War I, he was a member of the American Legion and the 40 & 8 Society.
Mr. Bethard was active in both civic and business affairs here and organized Coushatta's Chamber of Commerce in 1924. He was a charter member of the Lions Club in Coushatta.
Survivors include his widow; his mother, Mrs. H. W. Bethard Sr. of Harrisonburg; his son; a daughter, Mrs. Tyler G. Hagenwald of Shreveport; four sisters, Mrs. Joe Husbands, Mrs. C. R. Wilson and Mrs. B. G. Trunzler of Harrisonburg and Mrs. J. J. McPhillips of California; two brothers, B. M. Bethard of Gulfport, Miss., and Joe R. Bethard of Shreveport; and five grandchildren.
