Marion Brubaker had been a sweet-faced 12 year old girl who lived in the Hillwood Homes section off South Arlington Street outside of Akron, Ohio.
On August 27, 1962 she told her mother that she was going to the library, and peddled off on her bike. That was 2:00 p.m. on a warm Monday afternoon.
At 4:30 p.m. a call came into the Sheriff's Office in Akron, from a man living on South Main Street in the Portage Lakes section outside of Akron. He reported that his son had come home and told him that he found the body of a girl in the nearby woods. Deputies rushed to the man's house and the boy took them across the street to the wooded area where they found the nude body of Marion Brubaker. She was lying face up with her clothes scattered around her. About 30' from the body and 40' from a path was her bicycle, under an apple tree with several books beside it. A Summit County Deputy Sheriff opened one of the books and found a library card issued to Marion Joyce Brubaker of Killian Road, which was about 3 blocks from the scene. Two sheriff deputies went to the Killian Road address and returned with Marion's father who made a positive identification.
The Summit County Coroner ruled the death as a homicide due to strangulation.
The Eckard-Baldwin Funeral Home handled the funeral arrangements.
