Civil War Pension records state that "on or about the 1st day of August 1865 (John V. Nail) was attacked with dimness of sight and giddiness, and while at camp in the State of Virginia was never sent to hospital but was under care of Regimental Surgeon. He grew worse and worse after his discharge and is now almost blind, is confined to bed and no use of his limbs requires constant attendance, unable to feed himself." The family physician stated in a deposition "John V. Nail died on the 5th day of March 1868 of complicated physical troubles, of which disease of the spine with paralysis of the lower extremities were the most prominent."
