Age, 22 years. Enrolled, May 9, 1861, at New York city, to serve two years; mustered in as second lieutenant, Co. C, June 4, 1861; first lieutenant, August 2, 1861. Chelius became commanding officer of Company E on December 23, 1862, following the dishonorable discharge of their original captain. He mustered out with company, June 20, 1863, at New York city.

Chelius re-enlisted with Company I, 54th New York, on January 12, 1864. He was awaiting sentence of a general court-martial, at muster-out of company.
