John Burnside Smith 73, Indianapolis, prominent businessman and civic leader, died May 11, 2005 at St. Vincent Hospice. Johnny B., as he was affectionately known to family, friends, and colleagues, was born on November 23, 1931 in Indianapolis to the late John Sloan and Joan Laurie (Wall) Smith. He graduated from Indiana University with bachelor and master degrees and was a member of Sigma Nu Fraternity. He proudly served in the United States Army and was discharged as a first lieutenant. Johnny B. married Barbara Jean (Lamb) Smith in June of 1954; she preceded him in death on May 12, 2004. Johnny B. began working for his family business, Mayflower Transit, in 1957. He eventually retired as Chairman and C.E.O. of Mayflower Group in 1989. One of his many accomplishments during his long career, along with then Mayor William Hudnut, was moving the Indianapolis Colts to Indianapolis in 1984. Johnny B. will be remembered for his tremendously ethical ways for which he was known in the business world. He was on the Boards of Directors of the Mayflower Group, Indiana Insurance Company, Indiana National Bank, Fidelity Bank, the Wholesale Club, and Hook's Drugs. He also served on the Bank One Advisory Board for a number of years. Johnny B. was very civic minded and had served as past President of Junior Achievement and was past Chairman of the United Way of Central Indiana. In addition, he was past Chairman and President of the 500 Festival Associates. He also served as a Trustee of Butler University, Hanover College, Indiana Central University, and Brebeuf Jesuit. He was honored as a recipient of Honorary Doctorate of Letters from Butler University. Johnny B. was also a Trustee of the Riley Foundation. He was honored as a Sagamore of the Wabash under Governors Otis Bowen and Robert Orr. He was also a member of the Junto of Indianapolis and Meridian Hills Country Club. As a longtime member of Second Presbyterian Church, Johnny B. served as an elder, deacon, and past Chairman of the Second Presbyterian Endowment. He, along with his late wife, started the John Burnside Smith Center for Family Life Ministries at Second Presbyterian Church. Survivors include his children, John Sloan Smith (Abby), Lynn Burnside Smith, II, Nancy Louise Smith Moore (Bryan); sister, Nancy Morris; grandchildren, Jessica Sloan Smith, Tyler Coleman Smith, Lillian Greer Smith, John Burnside Smith, II, John Bryan Moore, and Mary Smith Moore. Friends and family will gather on Sunday from 1 to 5 p.m. in the Leppert Life Story Funeral Home, Nora Chapel, 740 E. 86th St. Funeral services will begin at 1 p.m. on Monday in the sanctuary at Second Presbyterian Church.
