He served in the United States Army as a Private in 318th Infantry Regiment, 80th Infantry Division. He was killed in action and posthumously awarded the Purple Heart. Surviving was his wife, Jewell Dean (Lyon) Baker, whom he married on August 22, 1931, in Bradley County, Arkansas. He is also survived by a son, Herman Lamar Baker, Jr. His brother Sgt James S Baker was also killed in action during the war.
