"JOHN JAY SMITH
Mr. John Jay Smith died yesterday at his residence, No. 6 Penn street, Germantown, in the
eighty-fourth year of his age. Mr. Smith was born in Burlington, N. J. in 1798, and while
quite a young man he removed to Philadelphia and engaged in business as a druggist. In
1829 he was librarian of the Philadelphia and Loganian libraries. From 1833 to 1842 he
was editor of Waldie's Circulating Library, and in 1844 he was editor of 'Downing's
Horticulturist.'
In 1842, Mr. Smith was treasurer of the Athenian Institute, and in 1847, he wrote a book
entitled 'Summer Jaunts Across the Water." Mr. Smith was the founder of Laurel Hill
and West Laurel Hill Cemeteries. In 1850 he resigned the librarianship in order to devote
his time to the Cemetery Companies of which he was president. A few years ago, Mr. Smith
resigned the presidency of Laurel Hill Cemetery, and of West Laurel Hill a year ago, in consequence of increasing affliction.
At the time of his death he was hereditary trustee of the Logonians. Mr. Smith was a
member of the Society of Friends. He leaves three sons, a daughter, and a number of
grandchildren. A quarto book has recently been published, giving the family history, and
entitled, ' The Burlington Smiths." His grandfather, Mr. John Smith was the founder
of the Philadelphia Contributionship in 1752. The funeral will take place on Monday
morning next, and the interment will be in West Laurel Hill."
