She was a daughter of Herbert Newell and Grace Ballard.
Rita Hope Newell Tuxill, 93, of Onondaga Hill, passed away peacefully at home on Friday morning. Hope received her Bachelor of Arts, and Library Science degrees from Syracuse University. Her professional career started as teacher of high school English at Chenango Forks and then Elbridge Central High School. Later she became an elementary school librarian at Jamesville DeWitt and then Onondaga Central, including the summer library programs. Hope's library was where students found her warmth and acceptance as well as her love of reading. Hope was a lifelong member of Lafayette Avenue United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday School for more than 50 years. She taught the senior adult class for many years and served as President of the local United Methodist Women. She was a member of the Board of Trustees, the Administrative Council, the Commission on Missions, and the Shepherding Committee. Hope was a member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church. Hope was President of the Onondaga Oswego Counties School Librarian Association and a member of the New York Teachers' Association. The joy of her life was her beloved husband and four children. Those celebrating her life of love include her devoted husband of 67 years, Leonard, who started loving Hope 79 years ago at Central High School; her children, David and his wife Laura of Nedrow, Barbara and her husband Ronald Hoffman of Syracuse, and Cherie and Donna of East Syracuse, John E., Cherie's twin brother passed away in 1993; her grandchildren, Bradley and his wife, Kelly, Kristin Hoffman, and Lisa and Claire Tuxill; her great-grandchildren, Ripley and Madigan. Hope's brother, Elliot and sister, Grace have passed away. Hope's memorial service will be held on Sunday, October 29 at 3 p.m. at St. Paul's United Methodist Church, Syracuse, New York. Family will greet friends following services. Private burial will be at Oakwood Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St., Paul's United Methodist Church, 2200 Valley Drive, Syracuse, NY 13207. Greenleaf Funeral Home, Inc..
