Funeral services for Miss Hazel Newman of Carthage were held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday in the Kilgore, Memorial Home, the Rev James Fox pastor of the First Baptist Church of Carthage, officiating, Mrs. Kenneth cutler was the organist. Casket bears were Tommy Dunn, Lester Aeilts, Roy Dighton,Merlin Gibson, Vernon Webster, and Ted Lane, Burial was in Moss Ridge cemetery.
Miss Newman died July 20 in Memorial Hospital in Carthage. She had been in declining health for several years. Born Dec 17 1893 on a farm near Denver, she was a daughter of James Henry and Mary Jae Andrews Newman. She was educated in Carthage High School and Western Illinois Teachers college in Macomb. She taught school in Hancock and McDonough Counties for more than 25 years. She lived in Hancock County all her life and was a resident of West Point before moving to Carthage two and one-half years ago. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Carthage. Surviving are a sister, Mrs. Ira (Goldie) Smart of Colchester; one niece, Mrs. Ralph Cain, also of Colchester, two nephews, William Russell Smart of RT 2 Carthage and W.F. Ebert of Nauvoo. two grand-nieces and two grand-nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Mrs. Elsie B Ebert of Hamilton, who died in 1943,
