Fourth Pierce Serviceman Being Returned

Remains of the late Pvt. Thomas J. Griner, the fourth Pierce county service man to be brought home for final burial, will arrive in Waycross Friday, Feb. 20 at 5:45 o'clock with a military escort, the army has announced.

Funeral services will be held at 11 o'clock Sunday morning at the Youmans Chapel Church with the Rev. H. O. Wainwright officiating. Interment will be in Ben James cemetery.

Pvt. Griner was a member of the 23rd Infantry Regiment of the Second division and was killed at St. George De Dell, France, at hill 192 on July 14, 1944. He was buried in the U. S. Military cemetery at St. Laurent, France before being returned to this country to be buried on home soil.

The remains will be brought to Darling Funeral Home Feb. 22 at 10:30 a.m. Pierce County American Legion Post 181 will act as honorary escort for the funeral cortege.

Active pallbearers will be kinsmen for the church service. After the funeral services at Youmans Chapel, the cortege will proceed to Ben James cemetery where it will be met by Company G of the 121st Infantry, Georgia National Guard. Capt. Hugh B. Brooks will be in command during military rites, including a firing squad and bugler who will sound "Taps" over the grave.

Survivors include a sister, Mrs. H. B. Head of Broxton, four brothers, S-Sgt. John Griner of Blackshear, S-Sgt. C. E. Griner of the U. S. Marines at Charleston, S.C., 1st-Sgt. David C. Griner of the U. S. Army in Italy and Cpl. James C. Griner of the Army at Ft. Bragg, N. C.

Funeral services for Pvt. Thomas J. Griner, Pierce county was casualty whose remains were brought home from France for reburial were held Sunday morning from the Youmans Chapel church with the Rev. H. O. Wainwright officiating. Burial was in Ben James cemetery.

Active pallbearers were Quincy Bowen, Robert Bowen, Kent Bowen, Jack Bowen and Paul Bowen.
