Levi Barnett was born on August 4, 1807 in Cannon Co, TN. Many family trees show he was the son of Elizabeth Ann "Betsy" Friar Barnett and Jarrett Barnett, Jr; however, according to census records, he was NOT the son of Betsy since she would have been seven years old when he was born. Analysis of DNA has shown; however, he WAS the son of Jarrett Barnett, Jr. The identity of his mother is unknown. Levi married Minerva Rainey in 1829 in Rutherford Co, TN. Levi and Minerva were the parents of: Jeremiah Barnett b. 1833 and John Barnett b. 1834. Minerva passed away before 1835. Levi then married Elizabeth Ann Williams on 12 October 1835 in Murfreesboro, Rutherford Co, TN. They were the parents of ten known children, nine girls and one boy. The family migrated from Tennessee to Missouri in 1839. Jeremiah, John, Margaret Jane, and Mary Adaline were born in Tennessee. The rest of the children were born in Missouri. However, the 1840 census shows two boys age 5-9 (Jeremiah and John) and one boy under age 5. This child must have died young. The known children of Levi and Elizabeth were: Margaret Jane Barnett b. 8 Aug 1836, Mary Adaline Barnett b. Abt. 1838, Ellender Caroline Barnett b. 5 May 1840, Martha Emoline Barnett b. Abt. 1843, Matilda Barnett b. 1 Oct 1844, Melinda Sibeline Barnett b. 30 Nov 1847, Nancy Ann Barnett b. 27 Sep 1849, Elizabeth Barnett b. Abt. 1851, Delana Elizabeth Barnett b. Abt. 1853, "Bill" Jackson Barnett b. 13 Feb 1855. The 1870 census shows an additional child, Joseph S. Barnett, born in 1864 in Missouri. He must have been a grandchild, probably the son of Mary Adeline Barnett who was deceased by 1870. Levi was a member of Company "F" Phelps Regiment, Missouri Volunteer Infantry, enrolled 18 October 1861 and discharged 12 May 1862. Levi died in 1880 and is interred in the Baker Cemetery near Thornfield, Ozark Co, MO. After Levi died, Elizabeth moved in with her daughter, Nancy Ann Barnett and her husband Michael Connor in Hancock, Pulaski Co, MO. Elizabeth is thought to be buried near them (unmarked) in Billingsley Cemetery, Iberia, Miller Co, MO.
