Named Rodney Glen Askew at birth, but always called Rod because he hated the name "Rodney".

Rod was born June 9, 1949, in Wasco, CA, the second son of proud parents Lois and Dillard Askew. Rod peacefully entered into eternal life in the early morning hours of Thursday, July 7, 2005, after a long battle with illness.

Rod grew up in Shafter, CA, and moved to Southern California in 1969. He spent over 30 years in the newspaper business, working for the Orange County Register and the Los Angeles Times.

Rod was a devoted father who loved all sports and spending time with his two sons. He coached their youth baseball, basketball, and soccer teams and was an unwavering supporter of their high school sports teams.

Rod fought his illness long and hard and did things that no one ever thought possible. He made everyone proud. His strength and determination have been an inspiration to us all. Rod was happy and full of life to the end. His sense of humor was unmatched and could bring a smile to anyone's face. He loved making people laugh and made even the darkest days bright for us all. Rod made the best of any situation and could always find the silver lining.
