Civil War Confederate Major General, Tennessee Governor. At the outbreak of the Civil War, he was a successful lawyer who opposed secession when he joined the Confederate Infantry in 1861. Commissioned Colonel of the 3rd Tennessee Infantry, he was at the battle and surrender of Fort Donelson. Promoted Brigadier General in 1862, he fought in the battles of Perryville, Chickamauga, Missionary Ridge and was wounded leading his brigade at the Battle of Franklin. He was promoted Major General in 1864, fought in the Atlanta Georgia Campaign and in the Carolinas, until he surrendered his forces at Bennett Place in April 1865. After the war, he resumed legal practice and was elected Governor of Tennessee, serving 1871 to 1875.
