|Birth: ||Jun. 2, 1819|
Martha Virginia Moon Goolsby was the daughter of William Moon, Jr. and Mariah Lightfoot. She married Isham Goolsby on Dec 22, 1836, in Scottsville, Virginia, at the age of seventeen. Less than four years later Isham died leaving Martha a widow with three children. She was twenty-one. Martha never remarried after his death.
Martha was a widow with three children, but she was also left with Isham's estate which included several tracts of land, she sold some of the land in December, 1840, five months after Isham died, but retained most of the land according to deeds that she signed later in her life.
Martha and her three children was living with her father and mother by the 1850 census, along with several of her siblings. While living with her parents Martha made sure that all three of her sons were well educated for at times they were listed as students, and away at school.
In April of 1861, William enlisted in the Confederate Army, followed by Isham in May. James enlisted in July of 1862 but furnished a substituted in order to be with his mother. Martha continues to live with James for the rest of her life. Her third son, Isham, was killed in battle on July 3rd, 1862. William was a soldier throughout the war and returned home after it's end to move on to Jackson County, Tennessee.
Martha, along with James' family were also living in Jackson County, Tennessee, by 1870. She was age fifty at this time. At the age of sixty, Martha and her second son James and his family were back in Fluvanna County, Virginia, as shown on the 1880 census. Martha shows up on the 1890 Jackson County, Tennessee Census but signs deeds in 1894 for land in Virginia. These deeds are the only reference we have to Martha's age. It is unknown how long after 1894 she lived or where she is buried. James lives until 1912 and is buried in Washington, D.C.
