In 1860, he was a laborer and boatman living in Chapman Township, Snyder County, Pennsylvania, and stood 5' 6" tall with dark hair and gray eyes. Both the 1860 and 1870 censuses imply a birth year of ca. 1834 or 1835 and list his name as "Kerling," as does the 1863 draft registration.
A Civil War veteran, he enlisted and mustered into federal service at Harrisburg September 9, 1864, as a private with Co. G, 208th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company June 1, 1865.
