Finlayson Thomas Hawley
(Cpl Co. H, 36th IL INF)

Thomas Hawley Finlayson was the son of William and Janette (Mitchell) Finlayson. He was born February 26, 1845 in Fifeshire, County Perth, Scotland. He was eleven years old when his parents and three sisters (Maggie, Jessie, and Isabella) set sail to America from Scotland. The trip took about seven weeks according to an account his sister Maggie gave to a newspaper many years later. The family settled in Bristol (Yorkville), Illinois in farm country where many other Scots, including his Finlayson grandparents, had already emigrated. Two more daughters (Minnie and Elizabeth) were born to Thomas' parents. He now had five sisters! Thomas grew up working on the farm in Bristol. Soon after the Civil War began, he enlisted for three years in Company H, 36th IL Infantry August 14, 1861 at Woodstock, IL. He was mustered in September 23, 1861 at Aurora, IL. He was carried on the original muster as eighteen years of age and five feet, four inches tall. His actual age at the time of enlistment was sixteen years, five months and nineteen days. He served his enlistment and re-enlisted as a veteran in the same company. He was discharged October 8, 1865 at New Orleans, LA, as a corporal. He turned in his rifle and returned to farming in Bristol, Illinois and in 1876 he married Katherine Darfler and raised three children: Edith (b. 1883); Willis (b. 1894) and their "late-in-life" son, John Logan, who was born in 1901. Thomas and his family moved to Wisconsin and bought a large farm which he oversaw for many years; in the 1910 census there are a number of farmhands listed along with his family members. He died in Chicago in 1925. His wife passed away eight years later.
