Union Civil War Officer. Born in New Hampshire, he graduated sixth in his class from the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1855. He was assigned to the 1st U.S. Dragoons and served with the unit on the United States frontier from 1855 to 1861. When the Civil War began, he was commissioned as a Captain with the 16th U.S. Infantry, Regular Army. He was promoted to Brevet Major for "gallant and meritorious service" in the Battle of Perryville, which took place on October 8, 1862. He was promoted again for service during the Atlanta Campaign in 1864 to Brevet Lieutenant Colonel. He continued to serve after the war at the permanent rank of Major with the 17th U.S. Infantry. He was dismissed from the Army in 1869. His last residence was in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He died from consumption at Nashua, New Hampshire.

After his initial dismissal, he was reinstated; he was later honorably discharged. (A career biography of him is given in entry #1682 in Cullum's Biographical Register of the Graduates of the Military Academy; it is online.)
