Joseph Walter Burke
Birth: Feb. 18, 1835
County Mayo, Ireland
Death: Nov. 7, 1900
Calhoun County
Alabama, USA

Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. Before immigrating to America, he took part in the Ireland Revolt of 1848, despite the fact he had four brothers in the British Army. He settled in Dayton, Ohio and studied at the University of Cincinnati Law School in 1858. At the start of the Civil War, he worked as a lawyer and a US Customs Collector, when he enlisted in the Union Army. He helped raise a group of volunteers and was commissioned Major in the 10th Ohio Volunteer Infantry on May 8, 1861. In 1862, he was promoted Lieutenant Colonel and Colonel in command of the 10th Ohio Infantry Regiment in 1863. He was especially noted for his efforts leading the 10th Ohio Infantry Regiment during the Atlanta Georgia Campaign of May 7 - June 27, 1864. He later commanded the reserve brigade of the Army of the Cumberland, until his discharge. For gallant and meritorious services, he was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on March 13, 1865. After the war, he was US Collector for the Port of Mobile, Alabama, until his death at age 65. (bio by: John "J-Cat" Griffith)
