William Paul Kefes, Sr., 85, Dies at Waukesha
William Kefes, Sr., 85, a patient at the Waukesha, Wis., hospital for many years, died there Monday evening following a long illness.
Born in Cincinnati, O., Dec. 25, 1868, son of the late Mr. and Mrs. William Kefes, he received his education in the schools there, and later moved to North Chicago, where he was engaged in the manufacturing business. In 1913, he came to Silver Lake and managed the Silver Lake Resort, and in 1915 came to Kenosha. He was a member of St. James church.
Survivors are a son and a daughter, William P. Kefes, Jr.; and Mrs, Helen Callahan, San Francisco. He was preceded in death by his wife Katherine Scully Kefes, Nov. 6, 1944, and a daughter Marie in 1915.
William P. Kefes was the son of William Kefes, an immigrant from Germany (Bavaria) who came to America (Ohio) in the 1860's and worked as a laborer/butcher; and Mathilda Schwemberger who was born about 1850 in Missouri to immigrant parents, Joseph and Mary (Strobel) Schwemberger from the Tyrol in Austria. Joseph was a musician and Mary ran saloons in the Over-the-Rhine section of Cincinnati. William had a brother Frank and a sister Johanna. His mother would eventually marry three times; the second husband was a John Kapp who was a cigarmaker in Cincinnati, by whom Mathilda had another child, Mary. The third husband was Adolph Morlock, a florist. William's mother dealt with mental illness throughout her life, and was found to be in a couple of census records (including the 1910 and 1930 census) in Longview Hospital for the Insane. She died at the age of 85 in Cincinnati. Her daughters remained faithful to her, but the boys appear to have been estranged from her. William met a young woman educated in the Sacred Heart academy of Clifton, Ohio, named Katherine Scully. They married November 16, 1892 in a large Catholic church in Cincinnati, Ohio named St. Francis Seraph which is located on Vine Street. William always appeared to work hard and be a good provider, engaging in various business enterprises throughout his life.
