Mary Elizabeth "Bette" Abel, 91, of Red Bank, passed away Monday, May 18, 2009, at Riverview Medical Center, Red Bank. Born Sept. 14, 1917 in Englishtown, she was the daughter of Charles Reid English, former mayor of Red Bank and Ethel Mount English. In 1939, Bette received her BFA from Rollins College and in 1942 her MFA from Yale University. From 1949-1955, Bette served with the U.S. Army. She married her husband, Leon Arnold Abel on Dec. 27, 1952 and they had one son, Craig Reid Abel. Bette continued with courses at the Art Students League of N.Y., Monmouth College and Rutgers University. She was an artist who worked in oils, pastels, watercolors, ink, charcoal, colored pencils and clay. She was an art instructor and exhibiting artist at the Guild of Creative Art in Shrewsbury. She was the art director for the Boro of Little Silver; a board member for the Monmouth Arts Foundation; an exhibitor at the Whitney Museum, Lincoln Center, New School, Little Silver Boro Hall, the Guild of Creative Art, Art Alliance, Riverview Medical Center, Midlantic Bank and the Monmouth Arts gallery. She was also the president of the Jersey Shore Chapter of People to People, receiving their lifetime achievement award in Berlin, Germany in 2007. Bette was AAUW chairwoman of the arts study group and a member of the N.J. Symphony League. By teaching art classes to literally hundreds of children and adults over the years, she communicated her passion for painting in particular and life in general. Exchange students from all over the world were welcomed into her home, some staying for weeks, some even for years. She was and will remain legendary for her unflaggingly positive outlook, infectious sense of humor, predilection for the color red and love of chocolate in any form (plus an occasional small bottle of zinfandel). Her advice was always to "go with the flow."
Bette was predeceased by her husband, Leon Arnold Abel; her parents, Charles and Ethel English; and her brother, Donald. She is survived by her son, Craig Reid Abel of Red Bank and New York; and some of her innumerable friends.
Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to noon Tuesday, May 26 at the Thompson Memorial Home, 310 Broad St., Red Bank. A funeral service will follow at 12:30 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church at Red Bank-Tower Hill, 255 Harding Road, Red Bank. Interment will follow at Old Tennent Cemetery, Tennent.
