MILTON-FREEWATER - Walter A. Boehm, 97, of Milton-Freewater died Sunday, Aug. 22, 2010, at the Stateline Retirement Home in Milton-Freewater. Funeral services with full military honors will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 27 at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Walla Walla. Private interment will be in the Willamette National Cemetery in Portland.

Mr. Boehm was born Jan. 23, 1913, in Windsor, Colo., to Victor and Pauline Fischer Boehm. He lived in Colorado, Wyoming and Montana, growing up in a farm family. At age 27 he was drafted into the Army, serving four years during World War II. He served in the 185th Infantry Regiment of the 40th Division in the South Pacific. He served first in the Hawaiian Islands, where he completed Ranger and Combat Training School and became an instructor for training purposes. He was then sent to the Philippine Islands, where during combat he earned numerous commendations including the Philippine Liberation medal with one bronze star and a Purple Heart. He was honorably discharged in 1945 at the rank of staff sergeant.

In 1946 he married Bernice Adam in Missoula, Mont. The couple made their first home near Hamilton, Mont., where he built roads for the forest service. In 1950 the family homesteaded near Riverton, Wyo. He raised hay, cattle and horses. In 1965 he moved his family and 50 horses to the Pacific Northwest to be near family in Oregon and Washington. The family settled in Milton-Freewater, where he raised apples and hay and pastured horses and cattle for a neighbor. He later sold his remaining horses and got a couple of pet donkeys that were with him to the end. Mrs. Boehm preceded him in death in 2002.

Mr. Boehm is survived by son Terry Boehm of Salem; brother Robert Boehm of Tacoma, Wash.; sister Victoria King of Portland; two grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
