OBITUARY: Marie Irene Hemphill

PENDLETON - Marie Irene Hemphill, 91, of Pendleton died Sunday, Aug. 22, 2010, at Juniper House in Pendleton. Visitation will be held from 2-6 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 25 at Pendleton Pioneer Chapel, Folsom-Bishop in Pendleton. Graveside services will be 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 27 at the Pilot Rock Cemetery.
Mrs. Hemphill was born Nov. 18, 1918, at St. Anthony Hospital in Pendleton to Charles and Nora (Michael) Kidwell. She grew up in Tetonia, Idaho, and attended Breezy Hill Grade School. In 1936 graduated from high school in Rexburg, Idaho, and moved to Pendleton as a young adult, where she attended Portland College of Beauticians. She then moved to Pilot Rock to live with relatives, and worked for the Lawrence Edwards ranch, cooking and housekeeping. She met Wilbur Hemphill at Lehman Springs and they married in 1939 at the Walla Walla Presbyterian Church.
She taught cooking and candy making through the OSU Extension Service.
Mrs. Hemphill is survived by sons Richard and Charles Hemphill, both of Pilot Rock; four grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband Wilbur Hemphill; and sisters Evelyn Matthewson and Helen Ruthruff.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Pilot Rock Cemetery District, the Umatilla County Historical Society or a charity of the donor's choice.
