Joseph Edward McDonald was born in Hampshire Co WVA April 3, 1862 When 9 yrs old he moved with his parents to St. Clair Co. MO where he remained 10 years. then moved to Franklin Co. KS where he resided until 1886, in the fall of that year he moved to Stafford Co KS.
He married Miss Ollie Allison in St. Clair Co MO Aug 29, 1888, to them were born 12 children two of whom died in financy. The ten living children Mrs Ethel Carr of Larned, Leslie, John, Elva, Stanley, Nellie, Thelma, Fern, Walter and Morris with their mother mourn the death of a loving father and husband. Out of a family of eight children he was the first to answer the soldomn summons. His surviving sisters and brothers are W.B. McDonald Colorado Springs, Mrs Rebecca Allison of St. Clair Co MO, Mrs Laura Humerickhouse of Ottawa, KS, Mrs Anna Murphy, Mrs Virginia Piper, James McDonald and Charles McDonald of this city, all of whom were at his bedside during his last illness, rendering every assistance possible, and who deeply feel the loss of a brother.
He professed faith in Jesus as his Savior and united with the Mt Pleasant United Brethren Church April 5, 1903, in a meeting held by the pastor C.E. Murphy, assisted by the writer. He will be greatly missed by his classmates and pastor.
He passed to his reward Wednesday, Aug 18, Funeral services were conducted by pastor, C.E. Farney, Friday morning. At the home the choir sang "Wonderful Peace," the twenty-third Psalm was read and prayer offered. The funeral service was preached in the Mt. Pleasant church from the text. "For to me to lived is Christ and to die is gain." The body was laid to rest in Eden Valley cemetery beside his parents and children. --- C.E. Farney.
