She was born in Augusta, May 12, 1910, the daughter of Benjamin R. Richards and Esther (Leavitt) Richards. She lived 79 years on Eastern Avenue in Augusta. She graduated from Cony High School in 1927 and taught school for 33 years in Chelsea and Augusta.
During those years she furthered her education at Farmington Teachers College, presently University of Maine, Farmington, attending summer classes and graduated receiving a diploma for the prescribed three year course. She continued studies and received her bachelor of science degree June 8, 1958. She retired in 1962.
She married Clinton Cunningham Sr. in 1962 after the passing of his wife, Tresa, who left a loving family of three sons, Kenneth and his wife, Ruth, Clinton Jr. and his wife, Romaine, and Lloyd and his wife, Lillian; two daughters, Virginia Allen and her husband, Fenwick, and Francis Quintal and her husband, George, and all their families and predeceased by daughter, Arlene Trytek.
Doris and Clinton Sr. enjoyed camping in Maine and spent their winters in Florida for 26 years. Following the passing of Clinton Sr., in 1988, Doris moved to Auburn in 1989 to be near her sister, Gladys Boston and family.
She is survived by two nieces, Lois (Boston) Beal of Freeport and Joan (Boston) Libby and her husband, Robert, of Auburn; and two cousins, Avis (Richards) Millett of Florida and Virginia (Richards) Jones of Quaker Hill, Conn.
She was predeceased by former husbands, Alba Barrett, Thomas Higgins and Frederick Donovan; her sister, Gladys; and two nephews, Kenneth and James Boston.
Interment will be held at Riverside Cemetery in Augusta. (Kennebec Journal 8/6/2010)
