Perry is the son of Roston Betts and Michel Baker. Married Dora B. Watkins on Oct. 18, 1892 in Athens County Ohio. They had two daughters, Michel Elaine Betts (b. 1899) and Martha Hellen Betts (b. 1902).
In the Nelsonville newspaper dated August 24, 1912, it states, "Perry Betts, 41, was almost instantly killed in mine No. 3 at Buchtel late yesterday afternoon. He leaves a wife and two children in this city. The accident occurred in the mine owned by the New York Coal company and leased by the Manhattan Coal Company.
"Betts and his 'buddy' had finished their day's work, and were coming out the east entry when the accident occurred. Just as they reached the door leading into the south entry, a rapidly moving motor bursted through the door and Betts was struck by a flying piece of the door. It is supposed that a bolt struck him in the head as there was a deep wound in his forehead, which caused death within a few seconds after the accident. Betts' companion escaped injury."
