Aurora Etna Turner was born to Francis Marion Turner and Eliza Wallis Turner.
She married Robert Allen Elam on January 21, 1892. To this union were born four children:
- Homer Price Elam (1893-1981)
- Eddie Lee Elam (1896-1900)
- Willie Walter (Bill) Elam (1898-1985)
- Francis Lafayette (Tick) Elam (1900-1967).
After Mr. Elam's death, she married John H. Hammond August 2, 1903 in Groesbeck, Limestone, TX. Mr. Hammond had 4 children from a previous marriage: John, Odie, Lula Belle and Lora.
John and Aurora were parents together to Mattie Mae Hammond Healer. Shortly after their daughter's birth, John and Aurora separated.
"Grandma Hammonds", as she was known to her grandkids and great-grandkids, was a sweet, sweet lady. I remember her dipping snuff and wearing her hair in a bun at the back. She would use her hair combs to comb through and hold her hair in place. She always wore a long shirt-waist dress with an apron.
The Hammond name is actually spelled without an "s". Some instances show it spelled Hammond while others show Hammonds. After their separation, stories from the Hammond side of the family indicate that Johnny was killed when bales of hay fell onto him from a trailer and that he is buried in Washington County, Texas. Another story (from the Healer side) indicate that he was killed by a train. No gravesite has been located as of this writing, so which story is true (if either) is unknown.
