My Grandpa, Raymond, was the fourth of five children born to William Arthur Eschman. His mother, Anna Pearl Comley Gammon, was the second of William's three wives. On 25 Nov 1937 he eloped and married Marion Lee Willman and they had five children: Terry, Kenneth, Richard, Paula, and Stephen. He was a member of the Civil Conservation Corps (CCC) during the Great Depression and he worked on some of the Corps projects in the Pacific Northwest during that time. After he returned to Louisville Grandpa worked in architectural salvage and restoration for many years and he was well known for his abilities in restoring and refinishing antiques. He was a talented carpenter in his own right and his grandfather clocks, secretaries and other pieces of homemade furniture were highly prized. After his retirement he could be found almost everyday in his shop either refinishing antiques or creating his own pieces of furniture, the ever-present handkerchief hanging out of his back pocket. In the early 1990's he was diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease and he suffered with that ailment for the rest of his days. After a more than decade-long battle with the disease, he quietly passed away on New Year's Eve, 2003. I was with him, holding his hand as he left this life. He and Grandma had been married 66 years.

Grandpa was also a talented and self-taught musician and could play, by ear, most any song that he heard. He was an excellent organist/pianist and one fond memory was watching him play his organ and piano at the same time, one with each hand. Grandpa was a man of few words but all of his children and grandchildren knew that in his heart he loved us.
