MARENGO – Judith M. Leifheit, 70, of Marengo, passed away Sunday, Feb. 5, 2012, at Centegra Hospital – Woodstock.
She was born Sept. 22, 1941, in Aurora, to Merrill S. and Lucille C. (Wolgast) Buerer. She graduated from Madonna High School in Aurora in 1959. On Sept. 26, 1959, she married Gary A. Leifheit.
Formerly of Aurora, she moved to Marengo with her husband in March 1989. She enjoyed time spent at their second home on the Mississippi River in Thomson and looked forward to spending winter months since retirement in Ft. Myers, Fla., with many newfound friends. She was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.
She was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Union, where she served as church secretary and a Stephen Minister. She was formerly a member of Our Savior Evangelical Lutheran Church in Aurora. Judith retired at the end of 2003 after 32 years as a school secretary, having worked for 16 years at East Aurora High School in Aurora and 16 years at Locust and Evergreen Schools in Marengo.
She enjoyed Civil War era living history and sewing Civil War era ladies and children's clothing. As a member of the McHenry County Civil War Round Table, she moderated numerous 1860s fashion shows with the other ladies at luncheons and teas around McHenry County. She also was a member of the McHenry County Historical Society where she volunteered as a docent for special programs and school groups.
She is survived by her husband of 52 years, Gary; her children, Douglas M. Leifheit of Aurora, Deborah (Gerald) Bonnell of Oswego, and Darlynn (Camron) Carter of Yorkville; her grandchildren, Dale (Stephanie) Leifheit, Peggy Leifheit, Sarah Bonnell, Samantha Bonnell, Tyler Carter and Taylor Carter; her great-grandson, Nathen Leifheit; her sisters, Dianne (Joe) Schmidt, and Eva DeCrane; and several nieces and nephews.
The visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 7, at St. John's Lutheran Church, 6821 Main St., Union. The visitation will continue from 10 a.m. until the 11 a.m. funeral service Wednesday, Feb. 8, at the church.
Interment will be in Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery, Hinckley.
