Eldest of three daughters of Sarah Mackey Twitty and an unnamed Cherokee Indian, she married D. William Baker in 1831 in White Co. TN. They had 15 children, 12 of whom survived.

The family moved to IL in 1839.
Melissa was renowned for her straight, black hair which was long enough to sit on. She also told wonderful stories.
