The second of two daughters of Henry and Elizabeth Thread Bennett, she married John Wesley Shupe, Jr. on 15 Aug 1864 in Edwards County at Wanborough Baptist church. They had six children.
They farmed and ran a molasses mill. Emily was feeding cane into the rollers of the sorghum crushing mill and caught her left hand in the rollers. The arm was crushed and had to be removed three inches below the elbow.
Just a short time before the birth of her sixth child, Wesley died and she was left to raise and support her children by herself.
She did this in style, earning the respect of the whole community and the great love of her family.
