Company C, 5th Cavalry /65th PA Cavalry Regiment

"Cameron Dragoons"

The Fifth Cavalry was recruited under the authority of an order granted by the Secretary of War, dated July 6th, 1861. It was at first known as the Cameron Dragoons. It was among the first of the three years' regiments raised, and being authorized by the National Government, was, for a time, held to be independent of the State of Pennsylvania. The first ten companies were from the city of Philadelphia, the last two from Pittsburgh.

Organized at Philadelphia July to September, 1861.

Mustered out of service on the 7th of August 1865, at Richmond, Virginia.

Regiment lost during service: 1 Officer and 76 Enlisted men killed and mortally wounded and 6 Officers and 210 Enlisted men by disease. Total 293.
