Mrs. Beryl Showers Holland, 82, a founder of Tri Kappa, 63-year-old Hoosier philanthropic sorority, died early today at Twin Brooks Rehabilitation Center near Greenfield.
She resided at 316 N. Washington Street in Bloomington.
A native of Bloomington, Mrs. Holland was the daughter of the late Charles and Maude E. Coatney Showers. Her husband, Dr. J. E. P. Holland, was a Bloomington physician before his death in 1938.
While attending May Wright Sewell's Classical School in Indianapolis, Mrs. Holland and six girlfriends decided they wanted something to occupy themselves in addition to their school work.
That was in 1900, and in 1901 the group became officially known as TriKappa. The sorority now has over 111 active chapters, 67 associate chapters and a membership of over 25,000 in Indiana. It is a strictly Hoosier group.
In addition to being a founder and life member of Tri Kappa, Mrs. Holland was a life member of the Grand Council of Tri Kappa sorority. She was also active in Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority at Indiana University for several years and was past president of the Hoosier Art Salon.
She was at one time a member of the T. B. Association, the hospital board, Public Health Association and was twice president of the Local Council of Women.
Active in politics, Mrs. Holland was the first acting national committeewomen in the Republican party from Indiana. She served on the State Board of Education under Governor Leslie and served for many years as a Republican member of the Monroe County Election Board.
Mrs. Holland was a member of the Trinity Episcopal church.
She leaves a son, Dr. Charles E. Holland, of Rt. 2, Knightstown who practices medicine in Shirley; two grandchildren, James C. Holland of Bloomington and Leah Catherine Holland of Indianapolis.
Funeral will be 1:30 PM Thursday at Day Funeral Home chapel, Dr. William A. Eddy officiating. Burial will be in rose Hill Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home after 2 PM Wednesday.
The family suggests that friends who desire make memorial contributions to the Tri Kappa Beryl Showers Holland Fellowship Fund at Indiana University or to the Tri Kappa Memorial Fund that assists deserving students in Hoosier colleges and universities.
