A Confederate veteran, He was in school in Kentucky when the Civil War broke out; too young to join the Confederate Army, he joined Morgan's Raiders. Captured a Union officer and took a muzzle loading Colt pistol (number 3452) from him. Later had the Richards conversion done to change it to cartridges.

After the war he became a lawman in Dublin, Texas. Was known to carry a pistol in a shoulder holster as well as his sidearm. He was killed in 1896 by Tom Wright, whom he had arrested several times, in front of a bank while helping a child from a stage coach. Wright slipped out of a doorway and shot him in the back of the head. Wright was hanged after trial in Stephenville and his brother, an accomplice, was sent to jail. He died in jail in the 1930's.
